Hi,
Would you buy used clothes directly from a brand? Or would you rather hunt through a thrift store?
โNew YouGov research, published October 19, found that 61% of Americans would consider buying secondhand clothes from thrift stores or charity shops. Just 29% would consider a brand's own resale service.
The survey of 1,000 US adults also found that everyday tops, coats, and pants attracted more interest than vintage or designer pieces.
Looks like plenty of us are open to giving someone else's sweater a second chance! ๐ฅณ
But which shopping route gives you more for your money?
The answer goes beyond the price tag!
A $12 sweater looks less exciting once you've added shipping, alterations, or a dry-cleaning bill.
A brand's resale shop might offer useful measurements, clearer condition descriptions, or returns. Those things could justify paying more. But check the policy before assuming they're included.
At a thrift store, you can inspect the fabric and seams yourself. You might find a fantastic bargain. You might also spend an hour only to discover nothing fits.
Before buying either way, check:
- The total cost. Include delivery, cleaning, repairs, and alterations.
- The condition. Look closely at cuffs, collars, zippers, and seams.
- The fabric. Our clothing materials guide helps explain what you're looking at.
- Your current wardrobe. Will you wear it, or are you mainly enjoying the discount?
Keeping clothes in use can help tackle the growing problem of textile waste. But buying five things you don't need still empties your wallet.
If secondhand shopping doesn't get you what you need, try upcycled clothing brands or our sustainable clothing recommendations.
The aim is to find something you'll wear often and keep for years.
Even if the label isn't exciting enough to photograph and put on Instagram! ๐
Happy bargain hunting,
James ๐
